2011 Top 100 NC Golf Courses

17 Courses in the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area Among the Top 100 Golf Courses in North Carolina

April 2012 — Out of nearly 600 golf courses throughout North Carolina, courses in the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen area earned 17 spots in the list of Top 100 Golf Courses in the state, as determined annually by the North Carolina Golf Panel.

Once again, Pinehurst No. 2, which reopened following an extensive restoration by designers Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, tops the list — as has been the case since the panel was founded in 1995.

The Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen region is home to five of the Top 10 golf courses in North Carolina, and eight of the Top 20, as indicated below:

9. Forest Creek Golf Club (South)

Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw's Dormie Club in West End also earned the state's Best New Course for 2011. Coore and Crenshaw moved little earth, instead taking advantage of the landscape - more than 300 rolling acres, 100-foot elevation changes, two natural lakes and hardwood and pine forests - to craft a course that boast undulating greens, wide fairways and more than a few waste bunkers (94).

The Golf Panel also produced a Top 12 list for seven different regions within the state - Coastal, Mountains, Triad, Triangle, Charlotte Metro, Eastern and Sandhills.

This year the Golf Panel selected the Best Par 5s in the state, then broke them out by region. In the Sandhills the following courses were deemed to have the Best Par 5s —

3. Pinehurst No. 8
4. Country Club of North carolina (Cardinal)
5. Dormie Club
