Polishing the Gem: Southern Pines Golf Club Gets Facelift
Golfers who appreciate "hidden gems" will enjoy this
one even more; when the Donald Ross designed Southern Pines Golf Club reopens
this September after an extensive renovation. One of five Ross courses located
in the Home of American Golf, Southern Pines Golf Club will benefit from the
latest agronomy advancements with the introduction of 419 Bermuda , a more drought
and disease resistant stain of grass on the fairways and tees. Other improvements
include updating bunkers, resodding green aprons, and reworking some tee boxes.
Even with these enhancements Ross purists can be assured that the routing, which
thousands of golfers have enjoyed since the course opened in the early 1920's,
will remain the same.
Often forgotten because of its tucked away location just minutes
from quaint downtown Southern Pines, Southern Pines Golf Club is owned and operated
by the Elks Lodge and outside play is controlled by sponsoring Elks members. The
key to playing the gem is to utilize the staff at the club pro shop as the
sponsoring member. Greens fees have always been in the lower third of the
price structure of the area's 43 championship courses, making the course a
bargain as well as gem. For more information call (910)692-6551.
