Profiles From Pinehurst - Those Who Helped Shape Pinehurst & Southern Pines

Fredrick Law Olmsted
- Landscape architect, designed Village of Pinehurst.
- Vision of Pinehurst included a New England style village with no right angle turn (90°) of any roads.

James W. Tufts
- Entrepreneur/visionary, founder/developer.
- Transferred 6,000 acres of pine barrens into Pinehurst Resort & Village, 1895.

Julius Boros
- Professional golfer, winner of 3 major championships, U.S. Open in 1952 & 1963 and won 28 other professional golf tournaments.
- Golf professional at Mid Pines Resort from 1949 to the late 1960s.

Ben Hogan
- Professional golfer.
- First professional win was at the North/South in 1940.

Peggy Kirk Bell
- Business leader, Professional golfer.
- A founding member of the LPGA.
- In 1953 purchased Pine Needles Resort with her husband. Family also owns and operates Mid Pines Resort.

Donald Ross
- Golf course architect.
- Prior owner of Pine Crest Inn.
- His firm is credited with designing over 500 golf courses. Considered by many to be the "Father of American Golf Architecture".

Governor Holshouser
- Lawyer, politician.
- Served as NC Governor from 1973 to 1977.

George C. Marshall
- Army chief, Secretary of Defense.
- Moved to Pinehurst in 1944.
- Rumored that he wrote his post-war recovery plan while living in Pinehurst.

Annie Oakley
- Sharp shooter.
- Star of "Buffalo Bill Wild West Show".
- Worked at Pinehurst giving lessons and shooting exhibits at the Green Club (her husband, Frank Butler was manager of this club).

Payne Stewart
- Professional golfer.
- Winner of the 1999 U.S. Open Championship.
- Memorialized at Pinehurst Resort with a statue.

Harve Ward
- Amateur golfer.
- In the 1940s and 1950s, one of golf's first amateur players.
- Winner 1948 North/South, 1955 & 1956 U.S. Amateur.

The Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is an economic development organization and non-profit authority of Moore County, North Carolina. The CVB mission is to promote the area as a destination for visitors, meetings, conventions and tours. The CVB is funded primarily by a three percent hotel / motel room occupancy tax paid by visitors to Moore County.
