Southern Pines, NC – May 15, 2014 – The Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is securing its position as a new member of the North Carolina Sports Association (NCSA) to further emphasize the county’s ability to attract amateur, collegiate, professional and international sporting events.  Sports tourism events generate significant revenue through direct and indirect spending by visitors.  Key to the success of attracting these events is a visible and active commitment by the CVB to respond to Request for Proposals (RFPs), market local sports facilities, and move forward with expansion of those sports facilities as the industry in North Carolina grows and responds to market demands.

The NCSA is a statewide, non-profit corporation whose purpose is to grow, promote, and enhance the general welfare of the sports industry in North Carolina.  NCSA brings together sports and hospitality industry representatives, who devote time, energy and resources to the development of sports tourism and related industries for the state of North Carolina. Heading up the relationship for the CVB will be Caleb Miles, President & CEO, and Beverly Stewart, Director of Sales.  With many successful, diverse events already to its credit – amateur and professional golf, senior tennis, kids’ golf, baseball and softball – the CVB is well-positioned to be a prominent player in the NCSA and help move the sports tourism industry to bigger and better opportunities.

As many families know, weekend traveling kids’ teams increasingly provide opportunities for sports skills development which can in turn facilitate potential athletic scholarship opportunities for their children.  These weekend tournaments and events also provide revenue boosts for area restaurants and retailers regardless of the level of competition.

Caleb Miles underscores the value of this new membership, “Sports Tourism is a key driver in our local economy that we plan to develop even further through this important partnership with NCSA. By leveraging our marketing dollars with other sports development organizations across the state we’ll assure this important market segment continues to grow and that valuable revenues flow into our economy. ”
