Join us outdoors on Weymouth Center’s beautiful grounds for live jazz on the last Sunday of the month. Bring your own blanket, chairs, and a picnic, and enjoy our cash bar with mimosas, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages available.

Coined for Duke Ellington’s classic “Come Sunday,” each jazz event features internationally renowned jazz artists who will perform their own rendition of Ellington’s masterpiece.

Our second group in the series is the Mint Julep Jazz Band. According to Michael Steinman of Jazz Lives, “The Mint Julep Jazz Band has a wonderful ensemble sound: often fuller than their four-horn, three-rhythm congregation would lead you to expect. Their intonation is on target, their unison passages are elegantly done but never stiff. And they swing. They sound like a working band that would have had a good time making the dancers sweat and glow at the Savoy or the Renny.”

With their little big band lineup of four horns, a rhythm section, and a vocalist, the Mint Julep Jazz Band recreates the hot jazz sounds of the 1920′s, 1930′s, and early 1940s through arrangements based on original recordings from the jazz age and swing era, as well as original tunes inspired by that time period. The group is based out of Durham, North Carolina, and is led by trombonist Lucian Cobb and vocalist/swing DJ Laura Windley, who have put their collective knowledge and love of swing music together to create an ideal dance band for swing dancers. Conceived in the fall of 2011, the Mint Julep Jazz Band was formed to fulfill the musical needs of a thriving local swing dance community in the Triangle area of North Carolina, drawing its musicians from the educators and former students of North Carolina universities with vibrant jazz programs.
