Fall in the Sandhills
It happened today. I took one foot out of the house to head for work and a cool breeze came across my face. I immediately stopped and took a deep breathe in relishing the crisp air and a few leaves falling around me. Autumn is hear! My excitement quickly builds for the seasonal change but also for all the local events that come with the season. I love that weird feeling of mystery autumn brings.
The Pinehurst, Southern Pines Aberdeen Area hosts haunted forest, trick -or- treat trail in the woods, fun and fright on a trolley, haunted house, unique store, unique museum, unique festivals and a very special farm full of fall favorites!
Some of my favorite local festivals and points of mystery, curiosities, and peculiarities each with their own special uniqueness:
Fall fun at Kalawi Farm September 30- October 30
The quintessential fall events- a pumpkin patch, hayride, and corn maze all in one place. Beware no one can resist the homemade ice cream. Make sure you schedule your time to visit on their website.
Corn Maze, Hay Ride, Pumpkin Patch, Jump Pillow, Super Slide, Barrel Train, Playground and Delicious seasonal Homemade Ice Cream Flavors!
The Dunrovin Experience– Open all Year
The Dunrovin Experience slogan is “There is something for everyone” and that is in fact a true statement. They carry a wide variety of products such as homemade fudge, Amish food, baked goods, coffee, ice cream, old fashioned candies, homemade soaps, Wilma’s Snake Oil, organic and natural foods, loose teas, garden décor, year-round Christmas decorations and much more! Oh, and did I mention they have a free exotic zoo in the back? Donations appreciated.
Random afternoons in the fall we like to visit our favorite parrots and monkey in the Zoo.
September 24-end of October 7:30pm-12 midnight Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights
Every year I tell myself this year I will be brave enough to go. I am thrilled that they have decided to offer a less scary version for us chickens from 5-8pm suitable for all ages. In addition, they offer a “Zombie Outbreak” paintball area
This year around museum is an iconic Southern Pines treasure. My favorite time to visit is in autumn; something about the fudge smell and some of the most unique taxidermy animals in the museum really gets me in the autumn spirit. It is also a place to pick up Christian books or Grandma’s fudge for gifts for the holidays.
Sardine Festival -October 14th
Yes, a SARDINE festival! This festival started as a family quarrel and has turned into a beloved festival where people come from all over the continent to experience the Aberdeen Sardine Festival complete with its own Sardine Queen! You will want to arrive early where the queen makes her debut to the festival on a fire truck. Where else can you celebrate a family disagreement and enjoy Sardines, moon pies and soda? By Donation only.
Bethesda Cemetery- Open all year to respectful guests
Bethesda Cemetery has been in continual use since the early 1700’s. Circa-1790 church features Old Slave Gallery, exterior bullet holes from Civil War battle, and graves of area pioneer settlers. Listed in the National Register.
I love walking around the beautiful cemetery in the late afternoon. It is peaceful and when the wind blows just right, and the leaves fall on the old part of the cemetery you feel the haunts of the past joining you on your walk.
October 3th Come in costume any time between 2pm-4pm to enjoy a family-friendly Halloween-themed nature trail and get some treats along the way.
Ederville Tractor Event November 4th, 5th & 6th, 2022
100+ years of trains and tractors- Even my girlie girl loves this event! They have all kinds of fun and unique things to do besides tractors and trains. Live music and a showcase of how the world has changed in the past 100+ years.
