Carolina Philharmonic’s Season Opening Concert

Symphonic Masterworks: Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Piano Concerto, Featuring George Harliono, Solo Pianist

Under the baton of Maestro David Maestro Wolff, The Carolina Philharmonic will open its 2017/18 Season on Saturday, September 16th at 7:30 pm in Owens Auditorium, Sandhills Community College, with a repertoire of beloved Symphonic Masterworks.

The audience will be treated to samplings from nature-inspired works, including Debussy’s La Mer, Beethoven’s Pastorale Symphony and Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite. Then after intermission, the prodigious 16-yr-old George Harliono performs Rachmaninoff’s lushly romantic, fiendishly virtuoso Piano Concerto #2.

The British pianist gave his first solo recital at age nine and has since performed across Europe, the US and Asia, appearing at venues such as Wigmore Hall, The Royal Festival Hall, The Royal Albert Hall and Chicago Symphony Centre. In 2016, his performance of Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 at the Great Hall of The Moscow Conservatory was broadcast live on Russian national TV and streamed live on Medici TV.

Since his concerto debut at age twelve, he has been a regular performer with orchestras including the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, The Mariinsky Orchestra, Tatarstan National Symphony Orchestra, New Millennium Orchestra of Chicago, Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra and Ealing Symphony Orchestra. George has also performed alongside eminent artists such as Lang Lang and Denis Matsuev, and worked with renowned conductors including Valery Gergiev, Alexander Sladkovsky, Evgeny Shestakov and Francesco Milioto.

George has been awarded prizes in numerous competitions throughout the world, and was recently granted a full four-year scholarship to The Royal College of Music. At age 16, he will be one of the youngest students ever admitted into this course.

“I can’t wait to introduce you to George,” says Maestro Wolff. “His poetic, high-intensity interpretations are already garnering him rave reviews internationally.”

This energizing, inspiring opening night will kick off an exhilarating 9th season. Be there!
