Cypress Bend Takes Top Honors At NC State Fair Wine Competition

N.C. Wineries Win 307 Medals in 2012 State Fair Wine Competition

Raffaldini Vineyards & Winery in Ronda took home the N.C. Winegrowers Cup for best of show in the 2012 N.C. State Fair Wine Competition. Cypress Bend Vineyards in Wagram won the N.C. Muscadine Cup for best muscadine for the second straight year.

In the amateur competition, Joshua Bennett of Wilmington won best of show.

The 13th annual wine competition was held Oct. 3 and 4, featuring 11 categories and a record 471 wines competing in the commercial division and 104 wines in the amateur section.

This is the first State Fair best of show for Raffaldini, which won with its Montepulciano. Cypress Bend’s white wine, Catherine, claimed the muscadine trophy.

The commercial competition was open to N.C. wineries, and the judges awarded 307 medals overall with a record 37 double gold medals. Additionally, judges awarded 22 gold, 103 silver and 145 bronze medals to wineries.

The amateur wine competition featured North Carolina hobbyist winemakers and awarded ribbons for first, second, third and honorable mention in each category. Bennett’s winning entry was Blueberry and Elderberry Port.
