Miles Retires From 30-Year Career in Tourism
CVB Vice President of Sales Beverly Stewart Named as Interim President and CEO
Caleb Miles retired as President and CEO of the Pinehurst Southern Pines Aberdeen Area Convention & Visitors Bureau on May 31, 2018, after a 30-year career in tourism.
There was no road map for how to do the job when Caleb Miles joined the Pinehurst Southern Pines Aberdeen Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB). In the late 1980s, both he — and the organization itself — were young and fairly inexperienced.
Reflecting on his pending retirement at the end of May, the longtime president and CEO said his departure will be bittersweet.
“It’s like in horse racing. If you are a jockey, you ride on one horse that is headed to the finish line. What I see is the role of the CVB is you are not just riding one horse. You jump from horse to horse, and there is not just one finish line. The finish line is always moving and changing and there some things at a further out finish line that I won’t be able to do,” Miles said. “The good news is it gets passed on. The new president will decide what to pick up.”
The CVB Board of Directors have named Beverly Stewart as interim president and CEO while the search is on for a permanent replacement. Stewart has served as the CVB’s vice president of sales and board member David Byers said this part of their decision-making was easy.
“She is a great choice to step in. Beverly knows all the mechanics of the organization and has done a great job in her capacity,” Byers said. “She deserves this opportunity and will do an excellent job in the interim.”
