Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area Tops For Golfers In North Carolina

SOUTHERN PINES, NC – APRIL 1, 2009 – If you’re a golfer, the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area has the courses for you, according to the NC Golf Panel’s 2009 ranking for the Top 100 NC Golf Courses. Twenty of the area courses placed in the Top 100 as well as placing in other regional rankings. Five of the courses are found in the Top 10. The venerable Pinehurst No. 2 ranked #1 on the list, Pine Needles #4, Country Club of North Carolina (Dogwood) #5, Forest Creek Golf Club (South) #7, and Pinehurst No. 4 #10.

To complete the list of twenty area courses (easily topping the list for the most courses in a region as well as the most public accessible courses): Pinehurst No. 8 #13, Forest Creek (North) #15, Country Club of North Carolina (Cardinal) #19, National Golf Club #22, Pinehurst No. 7 #37, Mid South Club #46, Pinewild Country Club (Magnolia) #50, Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club #53, Tobacco Road Golf Club #63, Legacy Golf Links #88, Seven Lakes Country Club #89, Pinehurst No. 6 #95, Pinewild Country Club (Holly) #96, Little River Golf Club #99, and rounding out the Top 100, The Country Club of Whispering Pines (East) at #100.

In other regional rankings, coming in for the “Best Bang for the Buck” are: Southern Pines Golf Club (Elks), Seven Lakes Country Club, Anderson Creek Golf Club, Tobacco Road Golf Club, Legacy Golf Links. “Best 19th Hole Courses” include: Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club, Pinehurst Resort, Forest Creek Golf Club, Country Club of North Carolina, Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club. And for those looking for a great challenge, the courses ranked “Most Difficult Courses” from the area are: Pinehurst No. 2, National Golf Club, Pinehurst No. 7, Tobacco Road Golf Club, and Country Club of North Carolina (Dogwood).

Claire Phillips, Director of Marketing for the Convention & Visitor Bureau emphasized, “The Sandhills area is rich in golf tradition and championship play and with such strong representation in the Top 100 for North Carolina, the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area clearly provides quality golf within close proximity to maximize any golf trip.”

The NC Golf Panel ( is comprised of about 135 members. Since 1995 the panel, founded by Bill Hensley, consists of media members, club professionals and general managers, industry executives, notable amateurs and business executives. This year’s ranking system was modified so that a course was ranked by its point totals averaged by the number of panelists who voted for it rather than just totaling the points for the course.

The Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is an economic development organization and non-profit authority of Moore County, North Carolina. The CVB mission is to promote the area as a destination for visitors, meetings, conventions and tours. The CVB is funded primarily by a three percent hotel / motel room occupancy tax paid by visitors to Moore County.
