Georgia may be more associated with peaches, but did you know that North Carolina is the seventh-highest  producer of peaches nationally, producing an average of 3.6 million pounds for market each year?

Common peach varieties in North Carolina include Biscoe, Candor, Carolina Belle, Derby and Norman. In a tribute to the popular and juicy fruit, the town of Candor, “The Peach Capital of North Carolina” stages an annual Peach Festival. In 2023, the popular event will celebrate its 25th anniversary.

This year, the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen CVB will expand upon the annual Peach Festival to create Peach Week, July 13-22. Aside from the annual festival, you can explore area restaurants featuring specially-made and fresh peach menu items and vote on your favorite ones! Experience select Moore County farm tours, a 5K run, Blues Festival, kid’s activities and so much more!

The NC Peach Festival kicks off Peach Week with three days of fun in neighboring Candor, highlighting the 25th year of celebrating!  Candor’s history is steeped in peach growing tradition. A true southern favorite — and you can be a part of it this July!

We have a strong generational connection to the peach industry dating back more than a century. It all began in the late 1800’s when Mr. H.R. Clark of Aberdeen, along with J.G. Tomlinson, A.W.E. Capel, and J.R. Page (prominent Montgomery County citizens), formed the Candor Fruit Company — an organization that was the first of its kind and would support peach growing on a commercial scale. In 1902, Mr. Clark purchased acreage below Candor and planted 30,000 young peach trees to start the first commercial peach orchard. From that point forward, the peach industry thrived in the Candor and Sandhills region of North Carolina.

ALL THINGS PEACHY

NC Peach Growers Society

Fun Peach Facts:

  1. Each year, a tree can produce up to 66 pounds of the fruit.
  2. The fuzzy fruit is handpicked from trees.
  3. Peach trees produce fruit for about 12 years.
  4. The peach is a nutritional powerhouse.
  5. A happy face can blush like a peach:When people first began cultivating their own peach trees in Europe centuries ago, it was common to share abundant crops with family and neighbors who didn’t have them. According to many linguists, receiving this generous gift, combined with the happy, rosy glow people get on their cheeks when they eat the tasty fruit, led to the expression of feeling “peachy” or “peachy keen.” And the person giving away the fruit? They earned a nickname too — a “real peach.”
